The Phonetic Typing™ Learning Object can be started as early as the 1st grade, once kids know their ABCs and understand that letters have sounds that create words, such as their name, they are ready for Phonetic Typing™. Phonetic Typing is for students of all ages who would like to improve their English spelling skills. The Phonetic Typing™ learning object directly correlates to National and California English Language Arts Content Standards for grades K-4.
For young children who are new to the computer keyboard Phonetic Typing™ starts with a video that teaches phoneme recognition combined with the associated finger for typing the letter on the keyboard. This is taught using hand signals along with recitations and a visual presentation of the letter. Once students recognize the ABCs and most of the associated sounds, they are ready to start the Phonetic Typing™ keyboard. The keyboard uses a multisensory approach to teaching keyboarding and phonics
Level One teaches consonant vowel consonant (CVC) spelling patterns, and how to type all the alpha keys on the qwerty keyboard. Capitalization, punctuation and spacing and simple sentence typing are also covered at this level.
The next level begins with an assessment to determine mastery of the CVC spelling pattern. Levels two and three teach students consonant blends and diagraphs. Students are also introduced to English grammar parts of speech and additional sentence typing. After mastering the assessment students progress to the next levels.
Levels four and five teach the long vowel sounds in the CVC final e (CVCe) spelling pattern and CVCe with blends and digraphs are taught at this level. Students continue English grammar to type sentences and practice typing pronouns, plurals and possessives.
Subsequent levels cover Vowel digraphs, also called the vowel teams, R-controlled vowels, vowel diphthongs phonograms and multisyllabic words. Students work at their instructional level and progress to higher levels based on assessment mastery. Spelling skills that are based on explicit phonics instruction and that are usually taught in the primary grades can be mastered by older students in order to improve word recognition and reading.
